So, while I was watching the film, I was also trying to put two and two together, to see if my memories of the events coincided with the film or not. His subsequent release, the court cases, his marriage to Rhea, Sunil Dutt’s relentless fight for his son, his second comeback film MunnaBhai MBBS, his marriage to Manyata, to his recent sentencing and jail time, everything is still fresh in my mind. The fact that Khal Nayak had just released gave the media unlimited supply of photographs for every article they wrote up, or broadcasted. I still remember how crazy the media had gone about the whole thing. I can still remember the never-ending discussions we had about Sanjay’s involvement. He became my sister’s favorite actor and before we knew it we were watching most of his films, that is, until the Bombay bomb blasts, which resulted in his arrest. With his sad face and puppy dog eyes, he was so lovable as Aman, that it was hard not to like him. So imagine my surprise when I saw him in Saajan. I wasn’t particularly fond of Sanjay Dutt, back then. Back then I was a big fan of Salman Khan, so when Saajan released I naturally went to watch the film. As someone who grew up in the nineties, I could relate to every instance in the movie, after Sanjay makes his first comeback. While I was too young for his Rocky days, I was old enough to remember the second half of his life. Watching Sanju was a unique experience for me.
How many people, who may have been wronged, have the chance to tell their side of the story to the entire world? This time around RajKumar Hirani is that guy for him. Whenever he hit a rough patch, he always had someone to bail him out, our help him get through. It is his explanation for some of his actions. From the very beginning, Sanju makes it very clear, that the film is about Sanjay Dutt, the man, and his many flaws. “Bad choices make good stories, and you are the king of bad choices”, says Sanju’s friend to him. What you get in Sanju, the film, is a list of some of those bad choices and their consequences.
